Bernard Jean Étienne Arnault known Bernard Arnault is a French business magnate, investor and art collector. He is co-founder, Chairman and CEO of LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton SE, the largest luxury goods company in the world. Arnault and his family have an estimated net worth of US$186.5 billion as of December 2022 according to Forbes, making him the second richest person in the world and the richest in Europe.
Bernard Jean Étienne Arnault was born on March 5, 1949 in Roubaix. His mother, Marie-Josèphe Savinel, daughter of Étienne Savinel, had a “fascination for Dior”. His father, the industrialist Jean Léon Arnault, a graduate of the École Centrale Paris, owned the civil engineering company Ferret-Savinel.
Arnault’s collection includes works by Picasso, Yves Klein, Henry Moore and Andy Warhol. He also contributed to making LVMH a major patron of art in France. The LVMH Young Fashion Designer was created as an international competition open to students from fine arts schools. Each year, the winner is awarded a scholarship to support the creation of their own brand and a year of mentorship.
From 1999 to 2003, he owned Phillips de Pury & Company, an art auction house, and bought out France’s first auctioneer, Tajan. In 2006, Arnault launched the Louis Vuitton Foundation construction project. Dedicated to creation and contemporary art, the building was designed by architect Frank Gehry. The inauguration of the Foundation at the Jardin d’Acclimatation Paris took place on October 20, 2014.
