Tony Jaa was born and raised in a rural area of Surin Province with Rin Saipetch and Thongdee Yeerum. He is of Kuy origin, a Mon-Khmer ethnic group that inhabits Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. He speaks Kuy, Thai and Cambodian.
As a youth, Jaa watched films by Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li at temple fairs, which inspired him to learn martial arts. He practiced the techniques in his father’s paddy field. “What they did was so beautiful, so heroic that I wanted to do it too,” Jaa told Time in an interview in 2004. “I trained until I could do the move exactly like I did. ‘had seen the masters do it. “
Jaa started training Muay Thai at his local temple at the age of 10. At 15, he was the protégé of stuntman and action film director Panna Rittikrai. Panna had asked Jaa to attend Maha Sarakham College of Physical Education in Maha Sarakham Province, from which he obtained a bachelor’s degree.
Jaa married his longtime girlfriend Piyarat Chotiwattananont on May 3, 2012. The couple have two daughters.
Jaa first worked as a stuntman for Muay Thai Stunt for 14 years, appearing in numerous Rittikrai films. He doubled for Sammo Hung when the martial arts movie actor ran an advertisement for an energy drink that required him to grab an elephant’s tusks and do a somersault on the elephant’s back. He was also a stunt performer in the Thai television series Insee Daeng (Red Eagle)
